Digital Construction Control
for the Heart Center Bonn
How Digital Twins create transparency on the construction site.
3D laser scanning, Digital Twin and digital construction control helped during the construction of the 25,000 m² Heart Center Bonn to detect construction errors early, reduce costs and make construction progress more transparent.
The Challenge
Large construction projects frequently struggle with the same problems:
- lack of transparency about actual construction progress
- planning deviations are detected too late
- time-consuming on-site inspections
- high costs due to rework and construction delays
During the construction of the Heart Center Bonn, a complex project with many trades had to be efficiently monitored – without slowing down construction progress.
The Solution
Through regular 3D laser scans and a Digital Twin, construction progress could be continuously documented. The decisive step: comparing as-built scans with the BIM planning models. This allowed deviations to be automatically detected, such as:
- incorrectly positioned openings
- clashes between trades
- planning errors in installations
The results were made accessible to all stakeholders via a central platform.
Challenges the Digital Twin Solved
Lack of transparency about actual construction progress
On large construction sites, there is often no clear overview of what has actually been built and where the project truly stands.
Planning deviations are detected too late
Discrepancies between planning and reality are frequently only noticed once they have already led to conflicts or delays.
Time-consuming on-site inspections
Many construction checks require time-intensive site walks to verify progress, dimensions and execution.
High costs due to rework and construction delays
Errors that are discovered late frequently lead to expensive rework and can jeopardise the entire construction schedule.
With qapture, we have better control over our project. This saves a lot of time, which we can instead use for contract negotiations, project follow-ups and proactive change management.
